This "Special Paper" describes the well-preserved diplograptacean fauna (63 species, of which 13 are new) of the Mugodzhary Range, Kos-Istek region, Kazakhstan. The fauna is remarkable for the high diversity of spinose and membrane-bearing forms, the evolutionary history of which is discussed in detail. A new classificatory scheme, encompassing all Silurian diplograptaceons, is proposed.
