ADDISON, Joseph and Richard Steele. The Tatler, Guardian, and Freeholder. With an Introductory Essay by John Habberton. Select British Essayists series. New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 182 Fifth Avenue, 1878. Copyright 1877. Early printing. 238 pages. Bound in the publisher’s original red decorative cloth, elaborately stamped in black and gilt with the names of British periodicals incorporated into the front-board design. Gilt lettering to the spine. A selection of essays from the influential eighteenth-century periodicals The Tatler, The Guardian, and The Freeholder, principally by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. Fair condition. Decorative front board remains attractive, with generally bright black and gilt stamping, but the cloth shows rubbing, handling marks, discoloration, and edge wear. Spine is faded and rubbed, with fraying and loss at the head and wear at the foot. Front hinge is weakened and partially separated, with binding material visible at the gutter; title leaf remains present but is vulnerable. Two handwritten paper identification labels are affixed to the front pastedown. Front endpaper has extensive colored-pencil scribbling. Title page has staining, handling soil, and circular moisture marks. Pages are age-toned with scattered spotting and occasional marks. No dust jacket. Unrestored. Please examine all photographs carefully.…
