- Book 1 of 3: A STEM-Powered Food Science Adventure Series for KIDS - Ages 4–8
Taste Trail: Tales from Yummville doesn't lecture kids about food. It does something far more powerful — it makes them curious enough to try it themselves.
When siblings Ayo and Oma help Grandma make strawberry lemonade, one question changes everything: "Why can't lemons be sweet like strawberries?" Grandma smiles, opens her magical cookbook — and suddenly the painting on the wall shifts into a glowing map. First stop: The Taste Trail in Yummville.
In Yummville, Ayo and Oma discover the five flavor keys — sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami — and the astonishing truth that every person has around 10,000 taste buds, each one a tiny lock waiting to be opened. They learn that taste and smell work together, firing signals to the brain to create something extraordinary. By the time they return to Grandma's kitchen, they understand what every delicious bite really is:
A little miracle. And they can't wait to try new foods.
WHAT MAKES TASTE TRAIL DIFFERENT
Real food science, story-driven. Taste Trail teaches the five basic tastes, how taste buds work as sensory receptors, the role of smell in flavor, and how the brain processes it all — through a magical adventure, not a textbook. Children ages 4–8 absorb every concept naturally because it arrives as wonder, not instruction.
Built for picky eaters. One Kindergarten teacher ran a taste test activity after reading it with their class. Their students became "so much more brave about trying things once they saw it as a trail to follow." This book reframes food as adventure, not obligation.
Perfect for ages 4–8, in any format. Vivid enough to captivate a 4-year-old at bedtime. Layered enough to engage a curious 7-year-old who wants to understand the science behind the magic.
A STEM read-aloud that holds their attention. Taste Trail introduces concepts aligned with early childhood science standards — sensory receptors, the five basic tastes, brain processing — through illustration-rich storytelling. Teachers, homeschool educators, and reading specialists recommend it as both a classroom resource and a home read-aloud.
Representation woven into the story, not added to it. STEM adventures with Black children at the center matter. Ayo and Oma are Black siblings who discover science alongside their grandmother in her kitchen, in a story where curiosity, family, and discovery belong to them fully. This is a book that brings diversity to the science adventure genre seamlessly — not as a lesson, but as a world every child can step into and see themselves in.
The gift they will ask for again. Some books get read once. Taste Trail gets carried to you at bedtime. A standout birthday gift, holiday gift, or classroom addition for any child ages 4 to 8 who loves asking why.
PERFECT FOR:
• Children ages 4–8 who ask questions about everything
• Picky eaters who need curiosity, not pressure
• Bedtime read-alouds, classroom story time, and the school run
• STEM and STEAM curriculum for Pre-K through 2nd grade
• Homeschool science units on the five senses and food
• Birthday gifts, holiday gifts, and "just because" gifts
• Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and teachers looking for something truly meaningful
WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:
"I bought this for my Kindergarten classroom and the kids were enthralled. The students were so much more brave about trying new things once they saw it as a trail to follow." — Kindergarten Teacher
"Perfectly worded — this book will not overwhelm children. I recommend it as a gift to a youngster." — Teacher & Mother

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
