Print on Demand. This book explores the fascinating history and textual evolution of an ancient Aramaic translation of the Hebrew Bible, known as the Targum of Onkelos. The author delves into the origins of the Targum, tracing its journey from Palestine to Babylon, and ultimately to Europe, where it underwent significant textual modifications. Through a meticulous examination of manuscripts, the author reveals previously overlooked differences between the European and Eastern versions of the Targum, arguing that the Yemenite manuscripts hold the key to understanding the original Palestinian form of the text. The book investigates not only the language and orthography of the Targum, but also its interpretations, highlighting the shift from literal translations to more nuanced and often haggadic readings. The author's work provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of the Targum of Onkelos, shedding new light on its historical context and literary significance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The purpose of this enquiry is to critically investigate the recension of the Targum of Onkelos preserved in the Yemen mss. And to establish a comparison between these Mss. And the Western or European texts, which are at present best represented by Berliner's recent edition. Berliner did not avail himself, however, of these Eastern mss. And his edition is therefore, to a certain extent, inadequate and can hardly be accepted as final. In order to establish a critical edition this enquiry goes into minute details of grammar, differences of vocalization and ortho graphy, additions and omissions, interchange of particles and variant readings. Parti contains the general outlines of this research and the results arrived at. Part II shows the more detailed comparison and lists of examples, following the text of the Bible, chapter and verse. The investigation concludes with a few specimen chapters of the Targum text, according to the version given by the Yemen Mss. It will probably reflect the original Palestinian form. Instead of making an index Ihave given a detailed Table of Contents. It is my fervent hope that this humble effort may be appreciated by students of the Bible and may give an incentive to the true appreciation of the work of Onkelos.
