From the Publisher
THE QUOTABLE PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER: "With Tapped Out, Paul Simon has issued an important warning which, if heeded, has the potential to avert a devastating natural disaster." EXCERPT FROM BOOKLIST REVIEW, 10/15/98: "Two new books from a recently retired U.S. Senator: the prospect doesn't sound particularly appetizing. But Simon is no ordinary ex-legislator: he has a newspaper background and a deserved reputation as a maverick. His. . .analysis of the world shortage of potable water should have more than regional appeal. . .U.S. citizens tend to feel water is a problem only for distant, primitive nations. Tapped Out provides a fine example of Simon's considered judgement. He devotes three of his six chapters in the first section, "The Problem," to water shortages in {CA, NV, FL,} and other parts of the U.S. The second section, "Answers," begins with a discussion on desalination (a vital technology the government and U.S. companies have regrettably ignored for years), followed by conservation pollution treatment, population control, and political and institutional changes. . .water will clearly be, as Simon argues, either a devastating source of international friction or a hopeful occasion for international cooperation in the twenty-first century." --Mary Carroll EXCERPT FROM PW, 11/2/98: Simon, a former Democratic senator from {IL}, delivers a call-to-arms to citizens and political leaders to act to save the world's water supply. "Within a few years," he writes," a water crisis of catastrophic proportions will explode on us." Simon, who was a newspaperman before he was a polititian, is a clear and forceful writer who makes use of compelling statistics to outline the looming crisis. . . Among the most immediate problems Simon covers are vanishing groundwater reserves in {CA}. polluted drinking water in India and the potential for geopolitical violence in the arid Middle East. . . .Simon's book is well reasoned and well researched and deserves serious attention--not least because he offers the bracing example of a former public servant still committed to the intelligent and informed discussion of a pressing issue.
