Text in English. 192 pp. This guide to the garden city of Tapiola is in two sections. The first part deals with the background and history of the planning and design of Tapiola. This was a process involving many of Finland's leading post-war architects. Thus far there have been no detailed monograph studies of individual architects, and this book emphasizes the creation of Tapiola through the successful collaboration of skilled architects and other professionals. A great deal of material has been published on Tapiola, and this brief description of its history can only cover a few of the relevant themes.I have concentrated on the early stages and the planning of Tapiola's eastern residential area, since this was the period when much of our present concept of Tapiola as a garden city emerged. Original documentary sources are cited for added detail The second part of the book describes individual works of architecture. The text is complemented by extensive illustrations. The present addresses are also given, and the dates when the buildings were completed. I wish to thank the Housing Foundation (Asuntosäätiö) and the staff of the Espoo City Museum for their kind assistance and patience in the preparation of this book.…
