Item description from seller

An exceptional hair work album containing approx. thirty-two (32) locks of hair, some worked into braids or with several loops, all collected by the same person: Talitha Matilda Hampton (1858-1930) of Grayson, Virginia. This album is notable for several reasons: first, the large amount of hair work samples; second, the presence of blond and bright red hair (both rare); third, for the clear manuscript labels for easy identification of individuals; and lastly, for the the fact that the maker of the album is clearly identifiable. Several of the examples are braided or have multiple loops. Overall, it provides an extraordinary and rare look into the social network of one girl: her friends, family, and acquaintances, all secured into one handmade album by her own hand. Surnames include Hampton, Collins, Higgins, Ward, Blevins, Rector, and Lowe. Also includes a sweet example of a mother and daughter sample: "Amanda Lowe + child". Single handmade book made from notebook paper (7.5" by 4.75"), [8], with approx. 32 locks of hair secured with sewing, unbound but secured in left-hand edge with sewing. A couple samples loose. Good. Toned with spotting, short tears. A couple hair samples may be missing. …
