What if the most terrifying monster is the one that looks back at you with your own eyes?
Forget the ghosts you know. These are not echoes. They are residents.
Tales from the Nightmares is a visceral journey into the heart of Malaysian horror, where the supernatural is seamlessly woven into the fabric of everyday life. This is not a collection of distant fables, but a series of confessions, harrowing accounts of ordinary lives shattered by encounters with the profoundly wrong.
Step into a world where:
🔴 Beauty is a Trap. A widow’s impossible allure hides a secret so rotten that seeing the truth can break a man’s mind.
👻 Playthings are Predators. Two silent children with paper-smile masks beckon from the edge of a monsoon drain, where the drop is not just into water, but into something older.
⚡ The Night has Claws. A lineman, stranded atop a storm-ravaged power pole, discovers he is not the highest creature in the dark, and the thing watching him has cat-slit eyes.
🏠 Your Home is a Lie. A man climbs the stairs to his flat, finds his door… and realises his entire floor is a phantom, a silent, empty layer of reality that shouldn’t exist.
🚲 The Forest is Hungry. Deep in the logging camps, a cheerful tune whistles through impossible jungle. He’s come for his grisly, rotting due.
🧱 The Walls Remember. A family’s dream bungalow slowly turns into a prison. Footsteps with no source. A voice that spews vile filth. A creature with too-long arms. And a secret, bricked-up room that holds the reason for it all.
Based on true accounts and bone-deep local lore, these seven interconnected stories chronicle a haunting that spans decades, from the rubber estates of the 1970s to the stifling concrete of 1990s KL. Author Anya Sharma masterfully blends slow-burn psychological dread with shocking visceral terror, crafting a uniquely Southeast Asian nightmare that feels chillingly authentic.
This is horror that lingers. It’s in the shadow that moves just after you look away. It’s in the extra step on your staircase. It’s the certainty that the ancient things in the land have not forgotten, and they do not appreciate being disturbed.
Open this book if you dare. But remember: some stories don’t just scare you. They move in. And the rent they demand is your peace of mind.
Perfect for fans of Paul Tremblay’s unsettling ambiguity, the folk horror of Andrew Michael Hurley, and the cultural terrors of The Hole by Hye-Young Pyun.
