Tannis was called to the Bar as a Barrister, Solicitor, Mediator and Notary Public in 1976 and became a member of the Law Society of Ontario for 47 years. After which he ceased his law practise and continues his focus on mediation, negotiation consulting, and developing courses for professionals. Other courses include a program for the general public in relation to their Wills and Powers of Attorney. He also continues to write books. Ernie helped establish dozens of not-for-profit organizations and charities, including REACH [which assist persons with disabilities], the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR) and Injustice in the Legal System (IJLS). He also co-hosted 260 weekly one-hour CHIN (Canada) Radio interviews on Alternative Dispute Resolution from 2004 to 2009, which was heard world-wide, and garnered two national awards. After a joint launch of Ernie's books, Dave Brown - former editor of the Ottawa Citizen - wrote a column entitled "A Lifetime Spent Fighting for Justice".
