Previous owner's name to front free endpaper. A bit of very faint scuffing to bottom edge of front, paste-on illustration. Spinecaps gently folded under. Red top-stain has a few tiny speckles. Dustjacket good. Jacket edges are torn, chipped and creased. Now Mylar protected. Black lettering to spine of red, cloth-covered boards. Black lettering on front. Front board paste-on illustration is same illustration on frontis by Ellis Silas. Illustrated endpapers in orange and white. Clean, tight, bright. 319 pp. Originally written in 1846, this is Herman Melville's first book. A classic in the literature of travel and adventure partially based on his actual experiences as a captive on the island Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva), in the South Pacific Marguesas Islands in 1842.
