FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.5 x 8 inches. 264 pp., including 2 pp. publisher,s advertisements at front + 24 pp. publisher's lists. Title page in red and black. Bound in original green cloth, gilt. Deckled edges. Extremities worn, head and tail of spine chipped and occasional foxing; otherwise a good copy. Illustrated by photogravure frontispiece. decorated by publisher's device on verso of half title. An allegorical novel with a bitterly satirical attack on the colonial policy of Cecil Rhodes. This first edition includes the notorious 'hanging incident' frontispiece which was suppressed in later editions. It recounts the redemption of the racist murdering soldier, Peter Halket after seeing a vision of Christ at his campfire.
