THREE VOLUMES. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. Vol. I, lix = [i] + 430 pp.; Vol. II, v + [i] + 503 pp.; Vol. III, vi + 486 pp. Bound in brown half leather over maroon marbled boards. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Binder's stamp of J. Fawn and Son, Bristol. Extremities worn, including edges and corners and top edge sunned. Flyleaves foxed, but otherwise a very good clean interior. Written in the form of thirty three letters and translated from the German, with adaptations for an English readership. An important survey of British artworks in museums, galleries and private collections, based on visits made in 1835 and 1850-51, still useful to art historians as a source for the provenance of paintings. Gustav Friedrich Waagen (1794-1868) was a German art historian who was appointed Professor of Art History at Berlin University in 1844. Dr. Waagen had a particular interest in British art collections, but also surveyed those in Germany, Vienna, the Low Countries and Paris and at the Hermitage in St Petersburg.
