Two volumes. vi,xxii,[2],487; 507pp. plus errata page in each volume and two pages of ads, three folding maps, and folding plate in second volume. Lacks the two maps from the first volume: the map of Malabar and Coromandel, and the Kino map of Arizona and New Mexico. Contemporary calf, ornate gilt spines, maroon gilt morocco labels. Slightly rubbed. Internally clean. Very good. Lacks the two maps from the first volume. An abridged translation of the first ten volumes of LETTRES EDIFIANTES., including Piccolo's description of the California missions; particulars of the missions in Mexico, Peru, and Hudson Bay; and Barrera's ABODE AMONG THE MOXOS AND CHIRIGUANOS OF SOUTH AMERICA. "A work so entertaining and curious, that it has been translated into most of the languages of Europe" - Cox. Includes handsome engraved maps of Tierra del Fuego, the Straits of Magellan, the "Mission of the Moxos, or Moxes: settled by the Jesuits in Peru," and the Malabar and Coromandel coasts. An "Account of the Chiriguanos of South America" is also included. The plate illustrates the ginseng plant. This set, as with the Streeter copy, contains the original leaves H1 and Cc5 in the first volume, and not the cancels. This set lacks the Kino map of Arizona and New Mexico.
