First published 1857; this is the 1982 6th Edition, the first issue carrying a Preface on the subject of "school bullies". Semi-autobiographical novel by English lawyer, judge & politician Thomas Hughes (1822 - 1896). 360 pgs. The story, set in the 1830s, at Rugby School --- a public school for boys that Hughes himself attended from 1834 to 1842. The fictional Tom Brown's life much resembles that of the author, his brother George Hughes, perhaps that of Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, and features Dr Thomas Arnold (1795 - 1842), who was the actual headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841. This classic tale of an English schoolboy spawned several like books ( Billy Bunter's Greyfriars School, Mr Chips' Brookfield, St. Trinian's, and, yes, Harry Potter's Hogwarts), and has been severally adapted to film & television.
