[Edo] 1844-46,Izumiya. Oban color woodblock print, sheet: 25 x 36.5 cm., print:22.2 x 35.4 cm., mild center fold, superb impression & registry, a bit 'dusty,' else a bright, clean & solid example, verso blank, period re-backing. * R A R E * . *** **** *** . . A SUPERB EXAMPLE FROM THE TOKAIDO GOJU SAN TSUGI SERIES . . . THIS BEING FUKUI STATION . * This stunning example is signed TOYOKUNI Kohchohroh [1786-1864/5]. He was the third pupil of Toyokuni I, his master. His actual name was TSUNODA Kunisada. He used several "Go" [studio names], including Shozo, Fuboh Sanjin, Fuchohan, Gepparoh, Gotei, Toyokuni III, Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Toyokuni III et al. He is actually Kunisada, see below. . *** THE ARTIST: KUNISADA [1786-1864/5]: He was a leading Ukiyo-e painter, print artist & illustrator, a pupil of Toyokuni I. He was one of the leading artists of the day. . Kunisada was is one and the same as Toyokuni Tsunoda, and known by a large number of his "Go" [studio names,] including Kohchohroh et al. See Lane below. . *** THE SCENE: According to the cartouche & its text: . "Legend of Sakuragaike Pond One day, in a dream by monk Honen Shonin, a dragon girl who lived in Sakuragaike Pond appeared and complained that she was in trouble with tens of thousands of insects all over her body. . When Honen went to Sakuragaike, a beautiful dragon appeared from the pond. . Then, the dragon girl was very happy and she said, 'I'll see you in the world of Miroku,' and disappeared into the water again." . This shows "Sakuraga Ike no Yuragi" ["The Origin Of Sakura Pond]. The visit of a woman to Hanen Jyonin's [High Buddhist Priest's] abode. . The head Monk pays respectful homage to the dragon girl, likewise the Monk's Deshi [disciple/follower], a young man, both prostrate themselves in abeyance to the dragon girl. . *** The print is divided into three sections: top left shows a cartouche describing Fukui area and its attractions and beautiful natural features. To the right of this is the impressive, black background with white Kanji with print title boldly and clearly outlined. . Below these two sections is the two-thirds section of the color illustrated scene. It shows three people: A woman with very long hair wearing a patterned silk Kimono, she looks down on what is probably a Buddhist monk, with shaved head, wearing a beard. He is prostrate before, bowing and paying homage to her in respect. Behind these two people is a young girl disciple. She too bows to the floor in deep respect. Her outer "Hakama" [apron] has also that wonderful patina of oxidized iron pigment showing superb toning. . This Kabuki scene was acted by ICHIKAWA Ebizo, from the famous Ichikawa dynasty of state actors. . *** THE SIGNATURE: The print is signed in the block: TOYOKUNI Kohchohroh Ga [Picture by TOYOKUNI Kohchohroh], with a red "Toshidama] Hanko [seal/chop], typically found on the last Kanji of "Ga" in most all of his print examples. . To the right of this signature is a vertical oblong box with black outline and yellow coloring showing the block carver's name. Hoe Jiro. . In the left margin are two other black stamps: the upper is a round Kiwame [censor] Hanko, giving the approval and date range of Koka 1-3rd years [1844-46], firmly locking the date down. . Below that is the vertical square box showing the carver's name, Fusaijiro. The publisher's short name is ISE-ICHI, for ISEYA Ichibei. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: The print is in excellent condition, with superb impression & registry, clearly an early 'pull' from the woodblocks. There is an old, mild and feint center fold, this has been flattened in the distant past, and has a strip of Washi [handmade] mulberry fiber reinforcing it. . It is interesting to point out that the red inner silk Kimono of the woman has a superb patina, in that the original pigment was made from iron, it has nicely aged and has the excellent tint of darkening which takes a minimum of 100 years to achieve.

You have the right to cancel this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, RARE ORIENTAL BOOK CO., ABAA, ILAB, P.O. Box 1599, 95001-1599, Aptos, California, U.S.A., of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail no telephone messages or calls accepted). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.
Effects of cancellation
If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall carefully re-wrap the item in its original packing, protect from transit damage, insure, signature required at your expense, send to us at:

Books returned damaged, not in the condition sent to you will not be subject to return.

Otherwise without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
