About this Item

Fascinating history of America's early wars in this mid-nineteenth century profusely illustrated book. Many of the illustrations extremely quaint in a primitive style, others more sophisticated. Over half of the book taken up with the Revolutionary War. Also chapters on the War with Tripoli, the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. Wonderfully illustrated cloth cover in gilt showing the Statehouse in Philadelphia and with an elaborate border containing vignettes of a soldier on one side and a veteran with peg leg on the other. Vignette at top of the cover of a charge of U.S. troops at Cerro Gordo, Mexico. Back cover with gilt illustration of two native Americans and a white prisoner. Spine also has gilt embellishments and vignettes but there is fading and some chipping at a couple spots (but not interfering seriously with the design of the spine. Cloth edgeworn especially at back hinge, which looks like a crack that has been reinforce, and at corners. Contents quite clean but with moderate amount of age staining. Old bookplate on front paste-down, which is interesting one that shows an assemblage of weapons representing the former owner's collection presumably. Ads at back include a wonderful one on last leaf that has a full-page view of the publisher's building in New York. This is a street scene with people on the street. Bookseller Inventory # 1614
