Little Boy’s and Girl’s Library. 16mo. (14 cm.) 62p. Illustrated with seven full-page engravings attributed to "Elton" with each engraving also bearing the name "Whatman" (see more below). The one opposite the title page and the decorative title page itself have been hand-colored, as has the tail piece at p. 27. Sewn booklet in stiff cardstock covers printed in black and with a black hatch-mark design on the front cover and a list of New Juvenile Books, including The Little Boy's and Girl's Library, on the rear cover. Covers quite soiled and darkened, 1.5" piece missing at the bottom of the spine and along the rear gutter, corners mostly square and flat, all engravings in very good to near fine condition, hand coloring bright, scattered foxing throughout as one expects, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (1788-1879) was a prolific New England novelist and poet who edited the Godey’s Lady’s Book for over 40 years. Active in public affairs, she is credited with writing one of the first novels pertaining to slavery in the U.S. (and was the first woman to do so); she was also a champion of women’s education, and helped to found Vassar Collage. She was the author of the nursery rhyme “Mary’s Lamb” (now known as “Mary Had a Little Lamb”). According to Blanck, the authorship of the Little Boy’s and Girl’s Library series was uncertain, although Sarah J. Hale was the editor for all volumes. The authorship of this volume has been attributed to a Mrs. Burden, from the title page of an undated British edition in the Osborne Collection of Children’s Literature at the Toronto Public Library. The "Elton" printed on each engraving may be Robert E. Elton, an engraver/printer/colorist who operated a printing firm (Elton & Company) with John McLoughlin, Sr. in the 1840s. The "Whatman" printed on each engraving may refer to James Whatman the Younger (1741-1798), whose father, James Whatman the Elder (1702-1759), began to produce fine English handmade paper at his Turkey Mill in Kent around 1740. The son continued to develop the fine paper originated by his father. The handmade paper bearing the Whatman's mark was still produced for special editions and art books until 2002. It is not clear that this little booklet bears the Whatman watermark, even if the engravings bear the Whatman name. Still, this is a rare book with OCLC showing only 3 holding libraries. Date determined from the publisher's dates of operation at 127 Fulton-street, New York, which have been verified as 1839-1842. …

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Live Oak Booksellers, Langley, Washington, U.S.A., +1 360-540-4400, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
