Original Brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and front panel on bevel edged boards, 185 x 125 mm approx. Publisher's adverts to end papers, xii + 166 pp + 16 pp publisher's catalogue. Frontis Portrait of subject with tissue guard. Biography of the life and work of the universal philanthropist who laboured for Temperance, Prison Reform, Abolition of Slavery and Sabbath Observance. He owned a grocer's business in Tottenham which flourished and he from time to time left it in the charge of his foreman whilst undertaking his missionary work in Great Britain and Ireland until in 1821 at the age of 67 retired from his business and undertook a series of extensive missionary efforts on the continent, Russia and the US before returning to his home in Tottenham London where he ended his days. Good (Book- block recently re laid with new mull and spine liner from inside without disturbing the original cloth at spine. Plain Paper lining to gutters of end papers where accessed with resultant sound tight binding. Cloth rubbing/ wear involving splitting of up to 20mm at head of spine renovated. (This was not considered severe enough to warrant complete rebacking) Printed card of a previous owner to front paste down. Light foxing /browning to reverse of free end papers and to half title.
