The Things We Get Used To
How Ordinary Things Slowly Become Our Normal
There was probably a time when many of the things in our present life felt extraordinary. The home we now enter without thinking may once have been something we desperately wished for. The salary that now feels ordinary may once have represented independence and possibility. The person whose presence we sometimes barely notice may once have been someone we were afraid of losing. Even the ordinary mornings we move through without attention may once have been the kind of life we hoped we would someday have.
Then something happens quietly. We get used to it.
This book explores one of the strangest abilities of being human: our capacity to become familiar with almost anything. We become accustomed to comfort, success, responsibility, relationships, routines, disappointment, loneliness, and even pain. What once demanded our attention gradually becomes part of the background. The extraordinary becomes ordinary, the precious becomes familiar, and the familiar can eventually become invisible.
The Things We Get Used To is not a book about telling us to be grateful for everything or to stop wanting more. Life changes, circumstances change, and sometimes we genuinely need something different. Instead, this book asks us to look more honestly at what happens when familiarity changes the way we see our lives. It asks what happens when yesterday's dream becomes today's expectation, when constant presence begins to feel permanent, when pain becomes normal enough to stop being questioned, and when we slowly become a person we never consciously decided to become.
Across four parts, the book moves from the things we become used to in life, to the dreams we once wanted, to the people whose presence becomes familiar, and finally to the versions of ourselves we gradually learn to live with. It explores why first experiences feel different, why extraordinary things lose their emotional intensity, why we sometimes stop seeing the life already around us, why success keeps moving the meaning of enough, why people can become invisible through constant presence, and why we can become so familiar with our own lives that even we begin to feel like strangers to ourselves.
At its heart, this is a book about attention. Familiarity does not necessarily mean that something has lost its value. Sometimes it simply means that we have stopped looking closely. The house may still be the house we once prayed for. The people may still be the people who once meant everything to us. The achievements may still represent years of effort. The morning may still contain the same quiet possibilities. What changed may not always be the thing itself. Sometimes what changed was the way we experienced it.
But the book also recognizes the darker side of adaptation. We can get used to things that should not become normal. We can become comfortable with exhaustion, tolerate unhealthy relationships, accept constant disappointment, lower our expectations, and mistake endurance for a way of life. Being able to live with something does not automatically mean that we should continue living with it. Sometimes familiarity protects us. Sometimes it quietly limits us.
Perhaps that is why the question running beneath these pages is not simply what have we become used to, but what have we stopped noticing because we became used to it?
The people sitting beside us. The parents whose presence feels permanent. The love that survived its first excitement. The achievements that once seemed impossible. The salary that once felt huge. The home that once felt like a distant dream. The pain we learned to carry. The expectations we slowly abandoned. The person we became while adapting to everything around us.
