This book explores the Mediterranean olive grove as a living landscape shaped by centuries of human activity and now facing unprecedented environmental and social challenges. Through real-world examples from olive-growing regions in southern Europe and north Africa, it shows how everyday farming decisions, market pressures, climate change, and public policies directly affect soil health, biodiversity, and the long-term viability of olive cultivation. Developed within the Soil O-live European research project, the volume combines science, geography, and social insight to reveal what is happening beneath the surface of one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic agroecosystems. At the same time, it highlights practical pathways toward more sustainable and resilient olive groves, demonstrating how caring for the soil is essential not only for producing olive oil, but for protecting landscapes, rural livelihoods, and our shared environmental future. Este libro analiza el olivar mediterr�neo como un paisaje vivo, moldeado por siglos de actividad humana y que ahora se enfrenta a retos medioambientales y sociales sin precedentes. About the Authors

He holds a PhD in Humanities from the University of Ja�n. Associate Professor in the Department of Cartographic, Geodetic and Photogrammetric Engineering at the University of Jaen. He is a member of the University Institute for Research on Olive Groves and Olive Oils (INUO) and the Caja Rural AOVES Chair in Jaen. His current research focuses on issues related to spatial information management using GIS, particularly in the territorial and landscape analysis of olive groves. He is currently an active researcher in the European projects Soil O-live and LivingSoiLL. His latest articles on this subject have been published in European Planning Studies, Sustainability, Journal of Maps, Applied Geography, New Medit and Geojournal.

Professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at the University of Ja�n, head of the Research Group on Territory and Society Studies. He is a member of the University Institute for Research on Olive Groves and Olive Oils (INUO) and the Caja Rural AOVES Chair in Ja�n. His work focuses on analysing the complexities that characterize rural areas and the challenges they face, interpreting the interaction between ecological environment and human groups on different spatial and temporal scales, and analysing the effects of spatial connections and the role of public policy. From this perspective, he addresses aspects such as the dynamics of forest areas and protected areas, Mediterranean olive groves in their territorial and heritage dimension, as well as the demographic challenges of lagging areas.

Associate Professor of Ecology at the University of Ja�n (Spain), where he conducts research at the Institute for Research on Olive Groves and Olive Oil. He holds a PhD in Plant Biology from the University of Seville and has held postdoctoral and research positions at Duke University (USA), Virginia Tech (USA), and other international institutions. His research focuses on agroecology, plant functional ecology, eco-genomics, and plant–animal interactions, with particular emphasis on biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and adaptation to climate change in Mediterranean agroecosystems. He has published extensively in leading international journals, including Nature, Science, PNAS, Nature Sustainability, New Phytologist, and Functional Ecology, and serves as associate editor and reviewer for major ecology journals. He has coordinated and participated in numerous competitive European and national research projects and actively contributes to science-based sustainability and knowledge transfer initiatives.

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to KALAMO BOOKS, Burriana, Spain, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
