Description:

Photo of actual book by bookseller. We are pleased to offer this very rare book by Alfred Alsop. This is not a reprint or a modern copy, it is the original book Dated 1879 - in the original binding (Victorian Embossed Hardcover). The book is bright and has held up well in the over 130 years since it was printed There is some edge wear as can be seen the the photos, the gilt lettering is nice There are some fingerprints on a few pages that likely would be removed by professional cleaning. Internally the hinges have been repaired with library archival tape. There is one previous owner name on the inside of the front cover in lovely cursive pen. Yellow endpapers. Pages are tanned with age, but not brittle. From the first page: TEN YEARS IN THE SLUMS. by ALFRED ALSOP Published by John Heywood, Excelsior Buildings, Ridgefield, John Dalton Street, Manchester; and 18, Paternoster Square,London, E.C. Agents: Simpkin, Marshall, & Co., London; J. Boyd, 25, Piccadilly,Manchester 1879 (Entered at Stationers' Hall.) THE FRONTICE IS A SEPIA TONE PHOTOGRAPH TITLED " THREE GUESTS AT THE ARABS' BANQUET" see page 91. Total of 6 other (sepia tone) photo images of children from the slums of England captions / titles : Wax Lights (page 36) It's My Last Sir (page 56) Little Chips (page 82) Ere Yer Are Sir (page 96) Poor Little Ragged (page 112) Three Little Waifs (page 126) The book is Dedicated on the next page thus: To John Champion Needhan, Esq., of Manchester, This " Offering of The First Fruits" is Respectfully Dedicated, As a Feeble Token of Appreciation of His Constant and Generous Support to All Christian and Philanthropic Effort in The City. September, 1879 The book's opening page reads: "During March, 1869, I directed my steps through the many intricate courts, alleys, and back streets of Deansgate passing many gossiping, idle women, whose slatternly appearance, with their miserable, dirty, ragged children bespoke them to be the regular visitors of the tempting vaults attached to the gaudy gin palaces. Their unseemly gestures, curious looks, and immoral language spoke badly for the future of the squalid children tumbling about in the gutter." 154 pages plus several pages at the end that are advertisements (Young Men's Christian Association, other books by Alsop "Delving and Diving" or voices from the slums, Work Amongst Manchester Street Children, and Bankers to the Mission - Lancashire and Yorkshire Banking Company Limited" About the Author: Founded in 1869 by Alfred Alsop, a Methodist minister, Wood Street Mission is still a registered children's charity -located in the centre of Manchester. Its office is in Wood Street, off Deansgate. Wood Street's aim is to alleviate the effects of poverty on children and families in Manchester and Salford. In the book are photographs of the slum children and they are some of the earliest made, albeit they were done in a studio as portable cameras were not available during that time. The subjects in the photos do appear to be impoverished and in one photo the children appear to be stunted and have bone curvatures of the legs that may have been from rickets. Truly a remarkable book. Please contact us if you wish to make an offer. Bookseller Inventory #
