About this Item
Hardback, 1st UK edn. 3rd impression. Christie and Evans: the first full story of an appalling miscarriage of justice - or was it? A controversial and infamous murder story. In 1949 a man called Timothy John Evans was hanged for the murder of his child, whose body, together with that of its mother, Beryl Evans, had been found strangled in the wash-house of 10 Rillington Place. 4-yrs. later, 4 more bodies were found. All of these were women and all had been strangled - on his own admission - by John Reginald Halliday Christie. In addition 2 other bodies were found in the garden. According to John Eddowes in his book 'The Two Killers of Rillington Place' - there was no miscarriage of justice as Evans was guilty. Illus., Maps and Plans, Map pds (The Neighbourhood in 1949). 308pp. 8vo. h/back. Includes a loosely inserted photocopy of a letter and envelope from Ethel Christie to her sister Lily Bartle dated December 5, 1949, which was written shortly after the discovery of the Evans bodies, plus a photocopy of a newspaper article from the Daily Mail, July 9, 1998 regarding the auction of personal letters written by Ethel Christie revealing her growing anguish in the 5yrs. leading up to her death at her husband's hands in 1952, together with a photocopy of a letter from Michael Eddowes (John Eddowes's father) relating to the miscarriage of justice when Timothy Evans was hanged, along with a small cutting showing a picture 10 Rillington Place (in colour). An obituary, 'Ludovic Kennedy 1919-2009 Remembered by David Jessel' tipped-in to ffep. Browned edges, o/w Vg. Seller Inventory # 10598
