Item description from seller

Burnet, Thomas. TELLURIS THEORIA SACRA, ORIGINEM & MUTATIONES GENERALES ORBIS NOSTRI, QUAS AUT JAM SUBIIT, AUT OLIM SUBITURUS EST, COMPLECTENS. Amsterdam, J. Wolters, 1699. Small 4to. 558pp. Engraved Frontispiece, title, printed in red/black with vignette, (5), 12 illustrations in the text (p20, p21, p23, p24, p26, p30, p45, p70, p112, p150, p441, p258) + 2 folding maps, (1 of North & South America with California shown as an island, and 1 of the rest of the world). Early full vellum with ink-lettering of title on cover. Previous owner: Stanislas de Guatia, Rosicrucian and occultist. Overall very clean and in very good condition. With the book-plate of the famous occultist Stanislas de Guaita and a marginal annotation on p366, ownership rubber stamp, and bookplate. Very good copy of what is regarded as the "best" edition. TELLURIS THEORIA SACRA, orbis nostri originem et mutationes generales quas aut jam subiit aut olim subiturus est complectens, appeared in Latin in 1681 as two books. Occultist's Association Copy. --The World as a Gigantic Ovoid--. Burnet was an English theologian and a legal scholar who maintained that the earth resembled a gigantic egg; the shell was crushed at the deluge, the internal waters burst out, while the fragments of the shell formed the mountains, and at the same catastrophe the equator was diverted from its original location.…
