Although reprinted at least 3 times after its initial publication by Dorrance in 1923 and well-reviewed by the PHILADELPHIA SUNDAY RECORD and the NEW YORK EVENING POST, Victor Rubin's TAR AND FEATHERS is a virtually forgotten novel that explores racial intolerance amidst the KKK's influence during the post-World War I years. Dragged dying from the battlefield by a Harvard-educated Negro soldier named Williams, racist Lt. Robert McCall is brought back to health by Dr. Levin, a Jewish surgeon. While recovering from his wounds, Hamilton becomes friends with a fellow patient, Bill McCall, a Chicago newspaperman who is also a Catholic. The grandson of a Confederate captain and heir to an extensive cotton plantation, Hamilton returns home to Corinth, Georgia, after the war and becomes entangled with the "Trick Track Tribe," Rubin's stand-in for the Ku Klux Klan. When Hamilton is sent on a propaganda mission to Chicago by the Tribe, he reconnects with McCall and Levin, whose friendship helps him escape the influence of the Tribe. According to his obituary in the ARIZONA REPUBLIC (28 August 1967), Victor Rubin was "a former reporter for the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL and the CHICAGO HERALD-EXAMINER" who "retained a lifelong interest in historical affairs and was appointed executive secretary of the American Heritage Council, an organization formed to promote understanding of U. S. historical documents. After moving to Arizona in 1958, Mr. Rubin taught American Heritage classes at Arizona State University and Phoenix College." TAR AND FEATHERS is his only novel. Smith R-593.
