Synthetic Polymeric Membranes for Advanced Water Treatment, Gas Separation, and Energy Sustainability is a cutting-edge guide that focuses on advanced water treatment applications, covering oily wastewater treatment, desalination, removal of dyes and pigments, photodegradation of organic hazardous materials, heavy metal removal, removal and recovery of nutrients, and volatile organic compounds. Other sections examine the area of gas separation, including acidic gas removal, oxygen enrichment, gas and vapor separation, hydrogen separation, and gas sensing. Final sections cover applications for sustainable energy usage, including the use of synthetic polymer membranes in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and more.
This is a highly valuable guide for researchers, scientists, and advanced students, working with polymer membranes and films, and across polymer science, polymer chemistry, materials science, chemical e
- Explains the design, preparation and characterization of synthetic polymer-based membranes for advanced applications
- Provides a clear picture of the state-of-the-art in the field, including novel fabrication approaches and the latest advances in physico-chemical characterizations
- Supports the development and implementation of innovative, sustainable solutions to water treatment, gas separation and energy devices

About the Author
Professor Ahmad Fauzi bin Ismail is the Founding Director of the Advanced Membrane Technology Research Centre (AMTEC), UTM. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom, under the Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship. Prof. Fauzi is the recipient of more than 200 prestigious national and international awards. Among his most notable accolades are the Mustafa Prize Award / (OIC/Muslim Nobel Prize) 2023 (the first Malaysian to receive the Award), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize in Engineering Sciences 2019, Merdeka Award 2014, Malaysian Toray Science & Technology Foundation Award 2013, and three consecutive Malaysia’s Rising Star Awards (2016–2018), Malaysian Young Scientist Award, 2001. He also received the ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award 2000 and the Elsevier Groundbreaking Research Award, 2025.
Wan Norharyati Wan Salleh is currently a senior lecturer at the School of Chemical and Energy Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia, and an active research fellow at the Advanced Membrane Technology Research Centre (AMTEC), UTM. She is also the Deputy Head of Inorganic Membrane Research Group in UTM. Her research interests lie in the field of fabrication of nanostructured materials for membrane-based separation processes. One of the main focuses of her research is the applications of membranes for acidic gas removal and wastewater treatment. Her present research also includes design of novel photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. Her enthusiasm and dedication towards her research are reflected in her numerous scientific publications in high impact factor international referred journals and academics books. Until 2019, Dr. Wan Norharyati has authored more than 90 research papers in leading high impact international journals and 5 book chapters. Her current h-index is 19.
Norhaniza Yusof is currently a senior lecturer at the School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Faculty of Engineering in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia, and an active senior research fellow at Advanced Membrane Technology Research Centre (AMTEC), UTM. She is also the Deputy Head of Nanostructured Materials Research Group in UTM. Her research area focused on the membrane preparation and application, and also nanofibers fabrication for gas storage application. She has published more than 70 indexed papers in leading international journal, 5 book chapters, one original book, and one edited book and has lead 11 research grants. Her current h-index is 9. Dr. Yusof’s research has been recognized with the Excellent Service Award of UTM in 2015 and as the recipient of UTMShine in 2019.
