The media is often accused of creating unattainable mission statements through the omnipresence and positive contextuation of superslim actors and thus contributing to the emergence of eating disorders. Although a considerable number of empirical studies suggest that many girls and women have the reception of certain media content associated with a disturbed body image and eating behaviour, the findings cannot be integrated into a conclusive picture. The work explores the complexities of the relationships between a disturbed eating behavior and dealing with media based on an action theoretically based socialization model. In problem-centered interviews, 45 patients suffering from anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorder reconstruct the diverse meanings of media content related to the course of their illness. In the analysis of the data material, the different forms of media action are systematically traced and interpreted against the background of the situational and personal backgrounds of the affected parties. Quantitative and qualitative methods are integrated at all levels of the research process.
