The Symbolism of the Cross is a major doctrinal study of the central symbol of Christianity from the standpoint of the universal metaphysical tradition—the “perennial philosophy” as it is called in the West. As Guénon points out, the cross is one of the most universal of all symbols, and is far from belonging to Christianity alone. Indeed, Christians have sometimes tended to lose sight of its symbolical significance and to regard it as no more than the sign of an historical event. By restoring to the cross its full spiritual value as a symbol—but without in any way detracting from its historical importance for Christianity—Guénon has performed a task of inestimable importance that perhaps only he, with his unrivaled knowledge of the symbolic languages of both East and West, was qualified to perform. Although this work is one of Guénon’s core texts on traditional metaphysics, written in precise, nearly “geometrical” language, vivid symbols are necessarily here pressed into service as reference points, for how else could the mind ascend the ladder of analogy to pure intellection? Guénon applies these doctrines more concretely elsewhere in critiquing modernity in such works as The Crisis of the Modern World and The Reign of Quantity and the Signs of the Times, and invokes them also to help explain the nature of initiation and of initiatic organizations in such works as Perspectives on Initiation and Initiation and Spiritual Realization.
“Guénon established the language of sacred metaphysics with a rigor, breadth, and intrinsic certainty that compel recognition as a standard of comparison for the twentieth century.” —Jean Borella
“Guénon gave proof of a universality of understanding that for centuries had had no parallel in the Western world.” —Frithjof Schuon
“It was Guénon who taught me to seek and love the truth above all else, and to be unsatisfied with anything else.” —Fr Seraphim Rose
“Encountering Guénon’s work is akin to being struck by lightning: a dazzling initiation into a hitherto unknown way of seeing reality that reclaims the original integrity of the human condition.” —Samuel Bendeck Sotillos
“Guénon’s mixture of arcane learning, metaphysics, and scathing cultural commentary is a continent in itself, untouched by the polluted tides of modernity.” —Jocelyn Godwin
“Guénon was an unsurpassed master of the science of symbolism.” —Martin Lings
“Guénon reaffirmed the values that constitute the only sound basis for living a life with dignity and purpose, or forming of a civilization worthy of the name.” —Philip Sherrard
“No modern European writer was more significant than René Guénon, who expounded the universal metaphysical tradition that is the indispensable basis for any civilization deserving to be so called.” —A. K. Coomaraswamy
“Guénon’s works are such potent metaphysical attacks on the downward drift of Western civilization as to make all other contemporary critiques seem half-hearted by comparison.” —Jacob Needleman

Shipping terms
Postage costs quoted are based on an average-sized book, weighing 2 lbs / 1 kg; we will request extra charges if your book is larger than average.
Canadian rates are based on the price of Canpar courier. If you require delivery to an apartment, PO Box, or rural location, please inquire about the cost of shipping via Canada Post (usually around $13.50).
Most of our US-bound packages are couriered over the border, for shipment via USPS. We find this method of shipping is both faster and cheaper than the other options, even given the possible delay in dispatch. If you wish immediate dispatch, please inquire about the options.
International orders going surface, are sent via Canada Post "small packet" rate, which is the least expensive option for international shipments, but is NOT insurable, so these packages will be sent at the customer's risk. International airmail parcels are sent USPS Priority, which is insured, and the price of which is based on the cost of a standard flat-rate Priority envelope.
