THE SYMBOLARIUM DICTIONARY OF ARAMAIC AND HEBREW
The classic lexicon of the Hebrew Bible — modernized, and for the first time, made to run in both directions.
For over a century, students of Scripture have reached for the great public-domain lexicons — Brown-Driver-Briggs, Strong's, and Jastrow — for the meaning of a Hebrew or Aramaic word. This edition takes that authoritative foundation and rebuilds it for the modern reader: the Victorian abbreviations expanded, the dense scholarly apparatus distilled into clear, structured senses, and the whole set in clean, fully-pointed Hebrew type.
Inside you will find:
- Nearly 7,000 headwords covering the core vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic in a single volume.
- Every entry in pointed Hebrew script with SBL academic transliteration, part of speech, and clearly numbered senses.
- Verbs organized by their binyanim (Qal, Niphal, Piel, Hiphil, and the rest), so the whole range of a root is visible at a glance.
- Occurrence counts and hapax flags, with cross-references to Strong's numbers for quick lookup.
The feature no classic lexicon offered — a reverse index:
- Over 8,000 English terms mapped back to the Hebrew and Aramaic words that express them.
- Look up "covenant," "steadfast love," or "to redeem" and find every word behind it — the tool the seminary shelf has always been missing.
The combined reference the market has lacked: where the tradition forces you to keep a Hebrew lexicon and an Aramaic lexicon side by side, this single volume covers both — the Hebrew of Genesis and the Psalms and the Aramaic of Daniel and Ezra, set in comparison throughout.
A companion to The Symbolarium Grammar of Aramaic and Hebrew. Built to survive a specialist's scrutiny and to look at home on a collector's shelf.
Updating the classics — Gesenius, Brown-Driver-Briggs — for the modern reader.
