Paperback. With the support of the Race Today collective, squatters formed the Bengali Housing Action Group (BHAG), which organised support and vigilante groups to keep the community safe. Using oral history interviews and archival research, this book looks at the Bengali communitys contribution to this little-known episode of East End history, and how it can inform present-day housing struggles. This book explores the hidden history of the Bengali squatters movement. Faced with institutional discrimination in council housing and the existential threat of the National Front, hundreds of Bengali families in 1970s East London decided to squat, taking over entire streets and estates. In 1970s East London, Bengali families faced a terrifying double threat: blatant institutional discrimination in council housing and racist violence from the far-right National Front. Refusing to be driven out, hundreds of families took radical action—occupying abandoned buildings, taking over entire streets, and launching the Bengali squatters’ movement. In From Sylhet to Spitalfields, Shabna Begum uncovers this high-stakes story of resistance, detailing how the Bengali Housing Action Group (BHAG) partnered with the Race Today collective to organize defense patrols and secure their community's right to live in dignity.
