Some books are written at desks. This one is written from the best seat above the creek: the sycamore den.
In The Sycamore Den Book, a raccoon of a most resourceful nature lives near farmhouses and managed ground, where creek banks, pale bark, porch steps, woodpiles, feed rooms, orchard grass, sheds, cornfields, and the overlooked failures of human arrangements become part of a single, shifting field of attention. Across a collection of elegant, exacting, and quietly alert pieces, this nocturnal examiner considers the things that truly matter: the patience required by a stubborn latch, the proper use of a long way home, the difference between appetite and greed, the authority of a familiar route, and the value of waiting until a household has fully settled into sleep.
A sycamore den is never merely a place to sleep. It is shelter, lookout, storehouse, retreat, weather station, and a high chamber from which the human world may be studied before being entered too quickly. From there, a raccoon can measure the country around him: the creek by its mud and water level, the farmhouse by its back steps, the feed room by its scent, the porch by its leftovers, the yard by its dogs, the orchard by its windfall, and the shed by whatever truth is revealed beneath its lower boards.
By turns resourceful, lyrical, dryly witty, and unexpectedly tender, The Sycamore Den Book captures the particular intelligence of a raccoon living near people without ever belonging to them. It is full of patient hands, creek water, rural comedy, loose lids, old boards, fallen fruit, small calculations, and the acts of discernment through which a creature learns what may be opened, what must be avoided, and what is best left until another night.
For readers who love raccoons, literary miniatures, atmospheric country settings, animal narrators, and books that find depth in ordinary margins, The Sycamore Den Book is a companion for anyone who has seen a pale sycamore trunk above a creek and suspected that its hollow might contain more judgment than appears from below. The yard is not secure. Its edges have merely learned to look settled.
Splendid Things:
A windfall apple split neatly upon a stone.
The soft inward give of mud at the creek edge, telling what passed before me.
A feed-room door not quite shut because humans trust wood swollen by rain.
Frog song so loud it covers lesser errors.
The discovery, beneath straw, of an egg still warmer than the evening air.
Returning before dawn with wet paws and no witness.
This is not a conventional animal story or a sentimental nature book. It is a book about raccoons and people, appetite and patience, scavenging and return, opportunity and restraint, and the way a single sycamore den can teach a mind how to live near the human world without being claimed by it. Once entered, it is difficult to leave without looking differently at your own creek banks, porch steps, feed rooms, sheds, woodpiles, orchard edges, and the small signs by which a night visitor has tested a latch, taken what was left too long, and climbed home before dawn.
