PUBLISHER: Winnipeg : Columbia Press, 1927. DESCRIPTION: 310 pages; author's portrait with tissue guard; additional plates (portraits) and drawings; 22 cm. Preface/formáli by/eftir Jónas A. Sigurðsson. The author was born at Bessahlaðir in Öxnadalur in Northern Iceland in 1878, he was the son of Kristján Jónasson and Guðbjörg Thorsteinsdóttir; he emigrated to Canada in1901, followed by his widowed mother and siblings in 1906. They took a homestead at Mozart, Sask. in 1906, but he returned to Winnipeg and became a very successful building contractor in partnership with his brother Friðrik, suffered ill health in latter years and died in Hollywood, bequeathed a very large estate (totaling about $108,000.00) mostly to Iceland to establish a chair in Science and Chemistry at the University of Iceland and a home for disadvantaged children in Eyjafjörður, also for reforestation in Iceland, but also $20,000.00 to the U. of Manitoba). He wrote several books in both Icelandic and English. The Afterward (Eftirmáli) on pages [307]-310 mentions works on U. S. Prsident Woodrow Wilson and includes references to Jon. W. Defoe of the Winnipeg Free Press, in Canada. This book is comprised of the author's biographical accounts of an Icelandic-Canadian pastor, Jonas A. Sigurdsson plus some American politicians including Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, and an autobiographical account of the author's life in North America (including Canada), and in the military. One of the poems in the book was translated by prominent Icelandic-Canadian poet, Stephan G. Stephansson. THUS, SIGNIFICANT CANADIAN CONTENT. SUBJECTS: Ævisögur/stories; Vestur-Íslendingar/western icelanders; Æviskrár; Anthology. Additional entry: Jónas A. Sigurðsson 1865-1933. Note: First word of title on title page and front cover do not include Icelandic accents (and this is reflected in the Gegnir and AMICUS listings as well as Hjartar, p. 9; whereas half title and title on dust jacket include accents in first word of title). To add to the complexity, the title page and AMICUS use only one "n" in the author's first name, whereas Gegnir and Hjartar use two. Front hinge professionally repaired, externally - overall Very Good+ in green cloth hardcover, lettered in gilt. At time of listing, only one listing (of a single copy) on Amicus; not in Cornell.
