Anthony signs a lengthy autograph inscription on the first free endpaper to Adelaide Ballard (1842-1922), President of the Iowa Womans Suffrage Society. August 28, 1905. 1143pp., 6.25 x 9.5 in. InscriptionMiss Adelaide Ballard / Hull IowaIt is with the greatest pleasure that I present you with this volume to complete your full set of this History of Woman Suffrage - a record most wonderful of the struggle for Liberty - no other class has made such a valiant fight. Yours for the battle to the end.Susan B. Anthony / Rochester N.Y.August 28, 1905 Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a pioneer crusader for the woman's suffrage movement. At the time of her death, legal rights for married women had been established in most states, and most professions had at least a few women members. 36,000 women were attending colleges and universities, up from zero when she began. Although she did not live to see the passage of a national suffrage amendment (in 1920), Women had achieved suffrage in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Idaho, and several larger states followed soon after.Writing The History of Woman Suffrage dominated Anthony's time for much of the next decade. It came out in the heat of battle, and the preface notes that some activists felt that publishing a history was premature before the movement attained its main objective. But she and her co-authors were determined to capture the words and insights while their contemporaries were still living. Volumes I (the early period, from 1848-1861) Vol. II (1861-1876) and Vol. III (1865-1885) were written by Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Matilda Gage. This Vol. 4, written by Anthony and Ida H. Harper, came out in 1902.Condition: Good Condition, professionally conserved.…
