What if consciousness is not just a product of the brain?
What if subjective experience cannot be fully explained by computation, function, or matter alone?

In The Survival of Consciousness, Giulia De Ponti explores one of the deepest unresolved questions in contemporary thought: what is consciousness, and can it really be reduced to physical processes?

Through a careful and rigorous analysis of Roger Penrose, David Chalmers, and Philip Goff, this book brings together three of the most influential voices in the modern debate on mind, matter, and reality. Although they come from different disciplines, they converge on a disturbing possibility: current materialist and computational explanations may not be enough.

This book examines:

the hard problem of consciousness
the limits of computational theories of mind
Orch OR and quantum approaches to consciousness
panpsychism and the combination problem
the relationship between mind, matter, and explanation
the possibility that consciousness may point beyond conventional materialism

At the center of the book lies a difficult but unavoidable question: if consciousness cannot be reduced to computation or brain function, what does that imply about personal identity, reality, and survival?

Giulia De Ponti does not offer dogma or easy certainty. Instead, she builds a disciplined philosophical investigation that respects the achievements of modern science while refusing premature closure. The result is a book for readers who want serious thought, not slogans.

If you are interested in philosophy of mind, consciousness studies, neuroscience, AI, metaphysics, quantum theory, and the future of explanation itself, this book offers a demanding but accessible exploration of one of the defining intellectual problems of our time.

Can consciousness be explained without reducing it to matter?
If not, what else may be missing from our picture of reality?

Giulia De Ponti writes from a perspective that remains rare in contemporary discourse: she combines conceptual rigor, lucid expression, and a remarkable ability to connect philosophy, science, and the deepest existential questions. In her earlier work, she has already explored themes related to consciousness, mind, inner life, and the limits of scientific explanation, developing a voice that is both recognizable and intellectually coherent.

THE SURVIVAL OF CONSCIOUSNESS is part of a broader series of essays devoted to consciousness beyond materialist reductionism: an editorial project that gathers complementary yet self-contained volumes, designed to offer readers a wide-ranging, critical, and progressive view of the contemporary debate. Each book examines a different dimension of the same vast question: what consciousness truly is, what relationship it has to the brain, and whether subjective experience may point to something more fundamental than matter itself.

Through her books, Giulia De Ponti is building a unified catalog that explores consciousness from complementary angles, weaving together neuroscience, philosophy of mind, theoretical physics, and questions about the meaning of human experience.

These books confront the great questions that never stop drawing readers in:
WHAT IS CONSCIOUSNESS?
CAN THE MIND BE FULLY REDUCED TO THE BRAIN?
IS SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE JUST A BY-PRODUCT OF MATTER — OR SOMETHING MORE FUNDAMENTAL?
CAN COMPUTATION EXPLAIN AWARENESS?
AND WHAT, IF ANYTHING, DOES THIS MEAN FOR PERSONAL IDENTITY, SURVIVAL, AND REALITY ITSELF?

Store description

We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
