About the Author
A native of Long Beach, New York, Neal A. Sher, MD, FACS, received his BS and MD degrees with honors from Boston University by the age of 22.
After his pediatric internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, he entered the U.S. Public Health Service in 1972 and became a staff associate at the National Institute of Health (NIH). He spent the next 3 years at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, performing tumor immunology and immunotherapy research and authoring a number of papers in that field. At that time, he became interested in ocular immunology and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota, followed by corneal and external disease fellowship training at Moorfield's Eye Hospital in London. Returning to Minneapolis, he went into private practice.
Dr. Sher is an attending surgeon at the Phillips Eye Institute where he was a founding member in 1984 and has served as chief of ophthalmology. Active in teaching other doctors and students, Dr. Sher has been on the adjunct faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School since 1979 and currently holds the rank of clinical professor of ophthalmology.
Since 1988, Dr. Sher has devoted considerable time to studying and working in the field of refractive surgery. He holds several patents on related medical devices. He has authored or co-authored more than 75 scientific papers and book chapters, is a frequent lecturer, and is a reviewer for a number of scientific journals. In 1994, Dr. Sher was the first American to be awarded the prestigious Troutman Award by the International Society for Refractive Surgery for his work on the control of pain using diclofenac after PRK. He is the author of a textbook entitled Surgery for Hyperopia and Presbyopia, published in 1997 by Williams and Wilkins; this was the first book devoted to this topic. Dr. Sher authored a monograph on postoperative care after laser corneal surgery (PRK) published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and edited an Atlas of Refractive Surgery for the AAO.
Dr. Sher has been the principal investigator or co-investigator for a number of ophthalmologic clinical trials, as well as a consultant for a number of ophthalmic-related companies (including VISX, Inc). He has served as a member of the Preferred Practice Patterns Panel of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for Refractive Errors and Refractive Surgery. Additionally, he is on the editorial board of EyeWorld and Clinical Signs in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Sher makes his home in Minneapolis with his wife and two adult daughters. He is an avid movie fan and enjoys photography and gardening.
