Sunrising - one woman’s fierce assertion of self in a world both contradictory and captivating.
In 1898, Isabella Braithwaite abandons her quiet life in England for the wild landscapes of Southern Africa, inspired by the artist, Thomas Baines, and driven by dreams of painting Africa’s unspoiled beauty.
She meets and marries the banker, Anthony Craig and for a while they enjoy a pioneering lifestyle, until their lives are shattered by the death of their infant son.
In an attempt to pick up the pieces, Anthony accepts an offer from the wealthy businessman, Sir James Brooke, to partner him in an exploration company. This partnership includes moving into Sunrising, the beautiful house Sir James built a few years earlier.
Their lives improve dramatically after this.
Then, a second and more sinister tragedy occurs, leaving Isabella in turmoil. She no longer knows where she belongs or how she will ever cope again.
Sunrising is the story of one woman’s courage to start again in a land ripe with wonder and peril. It asks: can art heal where love fails? And can a broken spirit ever feel at home in a world so wild?
A novel that brings Africa’s spirit to life.
Fans of sweeping historical sagas set in rugged, evocative landscapes, or readers drawn to deep emotional arcs, where grief and resilience coexist will enjoy this book.
