Title Continued: ac nuper nonnullorum Duacensium Theologorum opera, & nunc eorundem nova cura, a pluribus mendis repurgata; Pp. 7 p.l., 216, , 220, , 341, , 208, , 168, index. General title in red and black with engraved printer's device, three section titles, each with woodcut printer's device, woodcut ornaments and initials, ruled text in double columns. Bound in contemporary full calf, spine gilt in compartments to a bold floral design between raised bands, gilt lettered direct, marbled endpapers, red stained edges. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, with minor staining to front cover and some noticeable scratch marks to rear cover, but overall an excellent copy internally, in a handsome and remarkably well-preserved binding. By the end of the 16th century, partly as a result of the prominence given to St. Thomas's teaching by the Council of Trent (1545-63), most Catholic institutions of higher learning on the European continent had adopted the "Summa Theologica" as the standard of Catholic doctrine in place of the "Sentences" of Peter Lombard. In recognition of this development, the University of Douai, founded in 1562 by Philippe II, issued a new critical edition of the Summa in 1614. It combined the textual scholarship of the august theological faculty of Louvain with the more recent critical work of the faculty of Douai. The present second edition of 1623 is substantially a reprint of the earlier edition, adding a new dedicatory epistle from the Douai theological faculty to Pope Urban VIII, and a letter from the printer to Jean Du Joncquay, abbot of Marchiennes.
