From the Author
Twenty years of directing mission teams and living extended periods of time in foreign countries has convinced me that mission team members need more than a burning heart and a call to "go." They need common sense advance preparation.
Even if you only plan to go on a four-day or seven-day trip, you need to make informed choices and prepare yourself to cope with a new culture. Advance preparation enables you to focus on the new culture rather than self-preservation.
I wrote Successful Mission Teams:A Guide for Volunteers to help first-time travelers feel like seasoned world travelers. It's filled with sidebars and tips to make travel to a foreign country easier. There are also tips on how to pick the tour that's right for you; tips on what to expect from certain types of tours; and tips on how to avoid tour groups that have good intentions but don't have the facilities or means to provide a good trip. Other info includes how to bargain in markets, when to give to beggars, how to keep self and belongings safe, and how to relate to teammates, missionaries and locals in the foreign country. For a truly great mission trip, be informed, know what to expect, and as much as possible prepare for it. Don't worry, there will still be enough unforseen surprises to make your trip exciting.
