Print on Demand. This book examines logic from the perspective that all reasoning equates to different cases of one uniform process, which is best described as the substitution of similars. This process is not limited to numbers, but applies to the concepts themselves. The author argues that the essence of reasoning is replacing one thing with another. Logic has its roots in the work of Aristotle, who provided a model that remained largely unchanged for centuries, which the author argues had several fundamental flaws. This book explains the impact of these flaws and provides a historical context for the work of recent influential logical thinkers including Boole, Hamilton, Thomson, and Mill, who have built on and challenged earlier models in the field. The author's approach has the potential to simplify and enhance logical systems by drawing clear parallels between logic and mathematics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

IN this small treatise I wish to submit to the judgment of those interested in the progress Of logical science a notion which has Often forced itself upon my mind during the last few years. All acts of reasoning seem to me to be different cases of one uniform process, which may perhaps be best described as the suéstz'mz'z'wz of sz'mz'lam. This phrase clearly expresses that familiar mode in which we continually argue' by analogy from like \to like, and take one thing as a representative of another. The chief difficulty consists in showing that all the forms of the old logic, as well as the fundamental rules of mathematical reasoning, may Q be explained upon the sane principle; and it is to this difficult task I have devoted the most attention.
