From buoyancy and ballast tanks to oxygen systems and deep-sea missions, this illustrated guide walks children through the real science behind one of engineering's most fascinating machines — explained in clear, age-perfect language any young reader can follow.
Inside, young explorers will discover:
- Why submarines sink and float — and the clever science that makes it possible
- How crews breathe, eat, and live for weeks beneath the ocean's surface
- The tools submarines use to navigate in total darkness
- The difference between research submarines, military vessels, and robotic underwater drones
- How deep-sea explorers use subs to uncover shipwrecks and ocean secrets
- The fascinating history of submarine invention — from early prototypes to modern nuclear-powered vessels
- The safety systems that protect crews under extreme pressure
- What tomorrow's submarines might look like — and what they could do
Who this is for:
Written for children ages 6–10, this nonfiction science reader is ideal for curious kids who love machines, the ocean, or asking "how does that work?" It pairs naturally with school science units on water, forces, and technology — and works equally well as a read-together or independent read.
Parents appreciate the straightforward explanations that don't talk down to kids. Children appreciate that it actually answers their questions.
If your child has ever watched a submarine disappear under the waves and wondered how it works — this is the guide that answers every question they didn't know they had.
