Taken by a doctor working in a provincial hospital in Suffolk, these fascinating patient notes are given context by an extensive set of appendices providing useful information on 19th-century medical practice. The editors have painstakingly deciphered the practitioner’s shorthand and translated the prescriptions and doses administered so that the symptoms, medical interventions and outcomes, as observed by the physician, can be readily followed by a modern readership.
