About this Item

Description:

London [& New York and Melbourne]: Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, 1901. After initial reluctance, "Scarlet" made its first appearance in 1887 and established the initial popularity of the famous detective. This is a Very Good copy of an early reprint of the Third Edition. An uncommon release. Dark blue cloth binding, decoratively rulled in blind on the front cover; titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xx, 224 pages; with a twelve-page catalog in the rear. Frontis illustration and many others within by George Hutchinson. Including a "Note on Sherlock Holmes" by Dr. George Bell. Bell's article was included because Doyle refused to write anything for the publisher. Ward, Lock had convinced Doyle to sell his copyright outright for a meagre sum, and he never would deal with them again [cf. Greene & Gibson, p. 10]. Interestingly, while there is no publication date, there is a page delineating the full publishing history, indicating this to be the ninth reprint of the Third Edition. Externally this is a Near Fine book, with unblemished textblock and only some mild rub to the margins. However, there are several previous-owner treatments that do affect its condition. The endpapers have an inked stamp, a blindstamp chop, and with one page clipped at the top; the half-title has a crossed-out stamp, followed by an inked signature. This book remains attractive, but this collection of several minor issues result in a lower grade than it might deserve. In an archival plastic protector. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by George Hutchinson. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 006299
