Prepared by the author, it includes a summary of key concepts for each chapter, complete solutions to all end-of-chapter exercises in the text, over 400 additional worked examples, and a tutorial on pushing electrons.
The authors of this textbook, DRS. PHIL and TINA BAILEY, received their Ph.D.'s in chemistry from Purdue University in 1969 and 1970, respectively. Phil specialized in organic chemistry and Tina in biochemistry. Before attending Purdue, Tina earned her B.S. in chemistry from the College of Saint Elizabeth in New Jersey and Phil from the University of Texas at Austin. Both are on the faculty of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly is an institution of about 16,000 students and is located on the rural and beautiful central California coast, just 10 minutes east of the Pacific Ocean. As a polytechnic institution, Cal Poly has Colleges of Agriculture, Architecture, and Engineering as well as Business, Liberal Arts, and Science and Mathematics. The University has become one of the more selective and acclaimed public institutions in the United States.
Tina is a professor of chemistry at Cal Poly. She is the recipient of the University's Distinguished Teaching Award and was Cal Poly's 1993 nominee for Outstanding Professor of the 23-campus California State University System. Her current interests are in new pedagogies for teaching chemistry, especially general chemistry. She has given presentations at national American Chemical Society meetings and has been an invited speaker in other venues on the "studio classroom" she developed at Cal Poly for teaching general chemistry for engineers. This pedagogy integrates lecture and wet chemistry laboratory in a 64-student classroom. Clusters of students and computers allow the use of technology to collect and interpret experimental data as well as use Internet resources for regular classwork and enhancement studies.
Phil is Dean of Cal Poly's College of Sciences and Mathematics, a position he has held for the past 16 years, except for one year as interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. During this time he has taught approximately one-third time each term in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He received an Advisor of the Year award as well as university recognition for his efforts in educational equity.
In addition to this textbook, the Baileys have collaborated in their private lives. As the parents of four children, Tina an Phil were Girl Scout and Boy Scout leaders, officers on the local swim team, and volunteers with the PTA. In addition, the Baileys have presented chemistry magic shows to the public for over 3 years; more than 125,000 have enjoyed their performances. Now, with their children as adults living away from home, they act as Cal Poly mom and dad to many students.
