Print on Demand. This book analyzes the influence of pagan rhetoric on the writings of St. John Chrysostom, one of the most celebrated orators of the Eastern church, through a study of the chief figures of speech employed by the Sophist rhetoricians, as well as the sophistic ecphrasis. Drawing on literary theory, biblical studies, and rhetoric, the author examines how the author employs tropes, figures of speech, and ecphrasis to convey complex theological and philosophical concepts. The book demonstrates that while the author was sharply critical of paganism and its errors, he was also appreciative of the eloquence of antiquity and sought to harness its persuasive power in his sermons. Through a deep analysis of Chrysostom's writings, this book offers significant insights into the development of Christian literature and one of its most renowned figures. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

We have not included in our investigation the study of rhyth mical clausulae in Chrysostom, because the question of prose rhythm is still a much-mooted one, and allows much room for subjective theorizing. Moreover, this subject is in itself large enough for a special monograph.
