Print on Demand. This book examines the Old Latin Bible, a collection of pre-Jerome Bible translations into Latin from the mid-second century. These translations predate the Vulgate Bible, and thus provide scholars with valuable insights into the development of the Latin Bible and the history of Christianity. The author demonstrates that the Old Latin Bible is a composite work, reflecting the diversity of early Christian communities. Some of its parts are more literal translations of the original Greek, while others contain significant revisions or additions. By studying the variations between the different versions, this book helps scholars understand the theological and linguistic diversity of early Christianity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

Drawing on the foundational work of Sabatier and later reconstructions, this book surveys the origins, variations, and scholarly debates surrounding the Latin translations of the Bible before Jerome. It explains why researchers consider multiple Latin versions and how citations from early Church Fathers shape our understanding of the text. The work situates Augustine’s Latin renderings within a broader philological context, showing how language, manuscript tradition, and interpretation interact in the early Latin Bible.
The author combines history, textual criticism, and linguistic analysis to illuminate how the Latinity of old Latin translations developed and why debates over single versus multiple sources matter for biblical and linguistic scholarship today.
- Context on the Old Latin Bible and its major scholarly sources
- Discussion of why multiple translations are debated and what evidence supports each view
- Overview of methods used to assess Latin renderings, word-formation, and syntax
- Relation of Latin translations to Greek (the LXX) and Hebrew origins
Ideal for students and general readers seeking a clear, careful map of this complex topic and its impact on the study of Augustine’s Genesis versions.
