Add to basketedited by Giampiero Scafoglio. Fabrizio Serra, 2015, voll. 2, pp. complessive 324 --- At present the Epic Cycle has become a subject à la page, much better known than a few years ago and much more attractive in the eyes of scholars. The synergy between the cyclic epics and Homeric studies has created a virtuous circle, insofar as the former has benefited from the theoretical and methodological discussion over the latter; but at the same time a clearer vision of the Epic Cycle has increased the knowledge and improved the view of the Iliad and the Odyssey. In this volume the articles differ widely from each other as also in their basic ideas on Homeric and cyclic poetry, approaches and working methods; but their diversity is a great opportunity to present a plurality of views that could engage in a lively and constructive dialogue, and help to produce an overall picture that went to capturing something of the Epic Cycle's complexity and multi-faceted nature. So the purpose of this volume is not to study the Epic Cycle in an isolated and 'static' fashion, but it is to try to view it in its dynamic and diachronic development; to judge it against the backdrop of the oral tradition and the rhapsodic practice; and to put it in relation to other contemporary and later cultural and literary productions. The first part of the book is devoted to the Epic Cycle viewed in the context of archaic culture, hand in hand with the Homeric poems, but including discussion too of Hesiod. The second part, on the other hand, deals with the presence of the Epic Cycle in later literature, covering a long period from the Hellenism to Late Antiquity. Sommario / Contents: I. Giampiero Scafoglio, Introduction.
