Print on Demand. This book is a guide for aspiring composers seeking to master the art of fugal composition. While acknowledging the wealth of existing knowledge on the subject, the author identifies key areas where further explanation and illustration are needed. The book delves into the intricate complexities of fugal construction, exploring techniques such as writing countersubjects, crafting effective episodes, and understanding harmonic patterns. The author draws inspiration from the rich history of fugue, particularly the work of J. S. Bach, but also delves into the evolution of fugal composition since the time of Beethoven. The author challenges conventional notions about the role of intellect and emotion in art, arguing that a balance between design and expression is essential for truly successful compositions. The book offers insights into how to elevate technical skill into artistic expression, ultimately revealing the secrets of creating fugues that are both technically brilliant and emotionally resonant. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Structured as a study guide for students and exam candidates, this edition frames the subject around kernels like the countersubject, middle entries, and stretto. It blends theoretical principles with concrete examples, aiming to reveal how technical devices can elevate artistic work without sacrificing musical clarity. The guidance covers how to plan an examination fugue, how to craft reliable counterpoint, and how to develop an independent accompaniment that supports a vocal line.
- Explore the relationship between subject and countersubject in double counterpoint
- Learn how harmonic considerations shape productive combinations
- See how to structure exposition, episodes, and middle entries for cohesion
- Examine practical guidelines for writing examination fugues and accompanying material
Ideal for students of music theory and composition, as well as players and teachers seeking a clear, usable framework for fugue practice.
