Item description from seller

Works by Caroline Norton, Henrich Freidrich Ludwig Rellstab, and Harriet Downing are bound into one in this unique volume Comprised of three novels, bound into one volume. The volume opens with Stuart of Dunleath, a romance by influential feminist campaigner Caroline Norton. After being denied a divorce and access to her three sons, Norton became deeply involved in the passage of laws for social justice. Norton's lobbying led to the Custody of Infants Act in 1839, and she was also a key voice in the Matrimonial Causes Act 1857, which moved marriage litigation from ecclesiastical court to the civil court, as well as the Married Women's Property Act 1870 which allowed married women inherit property and legally own any money they earned. The work does not share Harriet Downing's own experiences, but draws on the anecdotes of her friends. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper 'Gabby Pontonly'. With binders sticker to the front pastedown. In a half calf binding over marbled boards. Externally, sound. A little rubbed to the boards and the spine, with some wear at the extremities. The front joint has failed so that the spine is detached and flaps. Front hinge tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot. Good.…
