Add to basketThe Struggle to build Southend's First Wooden Pier was from the very outset mired in argument. Powerful landowners had different views as to where the pier should be built and who should pay for it. Some who considered themselves be part of the 'fashionable' society and held property in Southend simply opposed the pier. Fishermen and oystermen were also alarmed that their livelihoods would be irreparably damaged. On and off for 10 years there were multiple legal disputes accompanied by vandalism and violence. So step back in time and enjoy the remarkable story. Based on a wealth of material taken from contemporary newspaper and court reports together with extracts of the minutes of key meetings and years research by the author The Struggle for to build Southend's First Wooden Pier comes to life.
Marion Pearce has lived in Southend-on-Sea since she was a small child. She was the co-founder of SKIPP, Saxon King in Priory Park and spent many years campaigning for the return and display of the Saxon King exhibits, which are now displayed in Southend Museum.
Marion believes Southend has a wonderful opportunity to regenerate itself through ancient history. Marion has been active in getting the historic fountain repaired at Prittlewell Square, which is Southend's oldest park. She has campaigned too on the 14th Century Southchurch Hall, which was put on the "heritage at risk" list as well as keeping watchful eye on the Crowstone, the Royal Hotel, the Kursaal and of course Southend Pier.
Marion is the author of Milton, Chalkwell, and the Crowstone, now available from bookshops and online. Besides being an author of local history books, Marion has written the following available from online suppliers,The Roman Calendar,Celtic Sacrifice and Gods of the Vikings
