Print on Demand. This book uncovers new insights on the classification and distribution of frogs inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere, specifically focusing on species that exhibit a distinctive evolutionary feature: their sternum is formed of two arched cartilages instead of being a single robust bone as in most frogs. This classification is built on an analysis of the internal structures of these frogs, specifically the structure of their sternum and the presence or absence of ribs, coccygeal diapophyses, and teeth. The author, a leading expert in herpetology, presents a detailed examination of the structural diversity within this frog group, discussing the evolutionary significance of these variations and revealing the complex evolutionary history of these fascinating creatures. This work will captivate scientists and naturalists alike, providing new perspectives on the diversity and evolution of frogs and their place within the broader tree of life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The occurrence of a xiphisternal style similar to that of the Ranidae, may be re garded as an indication of superiority, not only in consideration of this affinity, but as a greater degree of specialization and ossification of the part. It appears, how ever, not merely among the most Raniform Arcifera, but among some with prolcoelian vertebrae, which have the salamander-like mode of reproduction, and also among some of the opisthocoelian species.
Notophthalmus viri d e s c e n s lays its eggs singly on leaves, e. G., at the union of the capillary segments of Myriophyllum, or along their length, pressing them together on the egg as it is deposited. They adhere closely to its gelatinous surface, and serve to conceal it.
