Print on Demand. This book is a detailed examination of the relationship between the microstructures of metals and their physical properties. The author begins with a foundational explanation of the nature of metals and how metallurgical processes affect their structures. From there, they delve into the examination of metal structures through microscopy, providing readers with practical techniques for revealing the hidden characteristics of a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They go on to explain the influence that structure has on mechanical properties like strength, hardness, and ductility, and even explore the role that structure plays in chemical behavior. By providing a comprehensive overview of the subject, this book empowers readers to understand how the microstructure of metals determines their suitability for specific applications and helps them to predict how metals will perform in service. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The content focuses on how microscopic features relate to practical questions in industry. It highlights how reading a material’s internal structure helps interpret chemical analysis, predict behavior under heat and load, and guide testing and processing choices. It presents macroscopic and microscopic approaches, with attention to ferrous alloys, and explains how structure changes during working, heat treatment, and service impact strength, ductility, and reliability.
- How the structure of metals is revealed from the macro to the micro, using etching and other techniques.
- Why internal features like grains, inclusions, and defects matter for strength and failure.
- How test results relate to the material’s real structure and processing history.
- Examples of how structure explains behavior in different metals and applications.
Ideal for readers seeking a practical, engineering‑oriented view of metallography and its role in material selection, quality control, and failure analysis. It helps you connect what you see under the microscope with what you experience in service and testing.
